WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

Reporting to the Automation and Robotics Manager, your role as Automation Engineer will provide excellence in delivering solutions to technical challenges brought by clients and internal projects. The position is responsible to develop industry leading, market-ready technology solutions.

The role centers on leading the design and development of advanced automation and robotic systems, particularly for use in harsh marine, food procession and defense environments. Core responsibilities include integrating PLC, Vision and industrial robots with custom machines or client systems.

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Design, specify, and integrate automation equipment including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, robots, vision systems, and industrial networks.
  • Develop PLC, HMI, robot, and drive software in accordance with internal standards and project requirements.
  • Create electrical schematics and control panel designs with senior-level review and approval.
  • Perform system calculations and performance validation for throughput, cycle time, and reliability.
  • Participate in FAT, SAT, and on-site commissioning activities.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, and system-level issues during build and operation.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, manufacturing, software, and project teams.
  • Support procurement through technical vendor evaluations and bill of materials development.
  • Prepare technical documentation including procedures, test plans, and commissioning reports.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of internal standards, tools, and best practices.

THE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE YOU BRING TO THE TEAM:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or related engineering discipline; or an electrical engineering technology diploma with relevant experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in industrial automation design, integration, or commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of PLC programming using structured text, ladder logic, and function block.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, MODBUS TCP, MQTT, and OPC UA.
  • Must be licensed, or eligible for licensure, as a professional engineer (or engineer-in-training) with Engineers Nova Scotia, and must maintain their licensure in good standing for the duration of their employment as an engineer.
  • Ability to obtain Controlled Goods and Reliability security clearance.

Demonstrated capability in any of the following is considered a strong asset: 

  • Experience with SCADA platforms such as Ignition.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial robots and machine vision systems.
  • Experience integrating automation systems with higher-level software or databases.
  • Working knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience in client-facing or customer-support roles.
  • Exposure to machine safety standards, risk assessments, and safeguarding per CSA and ISO.

Our office is located in the heart of Spryfield, but more specifically, at 264 Herring Cove Road in Suite #100. If you know the Spryfield area – we are right across the street from Sobeys, close to the ever-increasing options for interesting lunches, and right next to beautiful lakes, forests, and trails.

HOURS OF OPERATION:

To the public, we answer questions and attend meetings between 9am -5pm. Our corporate culture values work/life balance and are proud to offer staff the ability to alter their start and end times of their workday. We recognize that not all individuals work most productively during a 9am-5pm schedule, therefore, we are happy to accommodate to your most productive working hours. As long as you complete your 8 hours of work and attend scheduled meetings – we support your altered workday!
