WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

Reporting to the Automation and Robotics Manager, your role as Senior Automation Engineer will provide excellence in delivering solutions to technical challenges brought by clients and internal projects. The position is responsible to develop industry leading, market-ready technology solutions.

The role centers on leading the design and development of advanced automation and robotic systems, particularly for use in harsh marine, food procession and defense environments. Core responsibilities include integrating PLC, Vision and industrial robots with custom machines or client systems.

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Specification, purchasing, and integration of motion control and automation equipment including industrial 6-axis and other robotics, PLC, HMI, and distributed I/O, motors and VFDs, and networking devices.
  • Perform calculations and systems engineering to ensure custom machines meet throughput capacity or other metrics.
  • Working with applications specialist both internally and externally.
  • Create and approve control panel and system electrical drawings for manufacturability and as fit for purpose.
  • Referencing CEC, ANSI, and or ISO standards during design as applicable.
  • Equipment and material procurement, scheduling, and managing.
  • PLC, HMI, VFD, and robotic programming.
  • Providing mentorship to junior Automation specialists and technical leadership within the department.
  • Conduct technical and code reviews providing feedback.
  • Lead multidisciplinary project team and collaborate with mechanical and electronics engineers.
  • Monitor project milestones and budgets.
  • Prepare technical reports for clients and procedures and standards for internal use.
  • Provide ongoing support and troubleshooting for client systems both remotely and on-site.

THE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE YOU BRING TO THE TEAM:

  • Minimum experience 5+ years of project and design experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical, or other engineering discipline from an accredited university.
  • Registered or eligible to register as a P.Eng. with Engineers Nova Scotia is an asset.
  • Eligible to obtain Controlled Goods and Reliability security clearance.

Demonstrated capability in any of the following is considered a strong asset:

  • Experience with schematic design, AutoCAD electrical preferred.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols (EthernetIP, UDP, MODBUS TCP, MQTT, OPC UA).
  • Programming industrial machines in structured text, ladder logic, and function blocks.
  • Knowledge of Inductive Automation Ignition SCADA software.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems and control.
  • Experience integrating industrial & software systems is an asset.
  • Experience with full project life cycle (ATP, FAT, SAT) with customer interaction.
  • Working on and leading interdisciplinary projects.
  • Experience programming machine vision systems.
  • Experience with industrial robot programming.

Our office is located in the heart of Spryfield, but more specifically, at 264 Herring Cove Road in Suite #100. If you know the Spryfield area – we are right across the street from Sobeys, close to the ever-increasing options for interesting lunches, and right next to beautiful lakes, forests, and trails.

HOURS OF OPERATION:

To the public, we answer questions and attend meetings between 9am -5pm. Our corporate culture values work/life balance and are proud to offer staff the ability to alter their start and end times of their workday. We recognize that not all individuals work most productively during a 9am-5pm schedule, therefore, we are happy to accommodate to your most productive working hours. As long as you complete your 8 hours of work and attend scheduled meetings – we support your altered workday!
