Today, we’re thrilled to welcome a guest whose extraordinary career has helped shape the future of marine innovation and defence in Canada and beyond. Jim Hanlon is an experienced technology entrepreneur with specialized knowledge of marine and naval defence markets.   He was the founding CEO of the Centre for Ocean Ventures & Entrepreneurship (COVE), a $30 million 70 tenant ocean technology hub in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

In this playful conversation he and Ben discuss the finer points of facilitating collaborative research, which can best be surmised in the mantra – “Synthesizing Opportunity out of Disparate Things”.

Jim is a veteran of the tech and ocean industries with 40+ years of experience across Atlantic Canada, Ontario, and New England. He’s held senior roles in engineering, marketing, and management, including President of Ultra Electronics Maritime Systems. Jim co-founded and sold two high-tech companies and was founding CEO of the Halifax Marine Research Institute, now COVE.

He holds engineering and business degrees, is a P.Eng., a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and holds an Honorary Doctorate from Dalhousie. He serves as VP of Research & Technology for the Marine Technology Society and continues to support ocean tech startups.
